Camera: Contour1080HD, set up per YouTube user slowroadie's recommendations. He also set up the mount for me, which is a goggle mount (included with the camera) with a wide velcro strap (for mini pumps). 4GB per hour of racing, give or take.

  • Sweet race! A beginner question. How do you lean into corners surrounded by a million people? I like staying single file in a crit. Once we bunch up, I like taking the outside line to stay clear or tail gunning. Seems to be a difficult skill leaning with others.

  • @macbiker It's tough to answer in a short comment I'll try. First, you need to get comfortable w/others around your bars and front wheel. I post at sprinterdellacasa.blogspot.com about the "Sphere". This involves some drills with friends/teammates touching elbows, shoulders, and even wheels (the last involves falling - should be done on grass at slow speeds). Second, you need to get comfortable following someone, even if they're in the middle of the field.

  • @macbiker As you get more comfortable following another wheel (and you can because you know they're probably going to make it around the corner) then you'll see how cornering is more about just the proper line - in fact, in a group, it's almost never about the "best line", it's about following others and not cutting anyone off. It used to take me months of racing each year before I felt okay in the field; now I feel okay right away. Practice and you'll be fine.

  • Thanks for posting these videos; they are great. The comments are extremely helpful to understand the tactics that go into a race. It's also useful to know that the racers who do well are suffering just as much as everyone else... but they don't give up. Thanks again for taking the time to make these videos available. Great job!

  • @TheMrBirddog I'm glad you like the videos. The comments make it possible for others to know what I was thinking, feeling, etc - the image alone doesn't convey much in terms of suffering, situational awareness, etc.

  • Your videos are great. I'm new to road biking and would like to get into racing in the future, so I love reading your commentary.

  • @mtthwksr Glad to be of help. I started with the helmet cam to show my now-wife what it's like to race bikes, but it ends up that she wasn't the only one who was wondering.
