http://www.fortpointpier.com This brief walkthrough of Officers' Row at Fort Andrews on Peddocks Island in Boston Harbor was recorded on March 2, 2011, as site preparation for pending building demolitions was underway. As of today, 9 of 14 of the buildings shown in this video have been demolished and (unconfirmed) the remaining 5 buildings have been stabilized.
Peddocks Island is one of 34 Boston Harbor Islands. The island's two larger drumlins are the site of Fort Andrews (near Hull Gut) and rehabilitated structures of a former Portuguese fishing village (near West Gut).
Populated by American Indians prior to settlement by Europeans, Peddocks Island was used as a military outpost during the Revolutionary War. Fort Andrews, built in 1904, was equipped with cannon batteries to protect Boston Harbor in wars through WWII. Officers' Row was characterized by a multitude of building types ranging from clapboard to masonry. Quarters along Officers' Row were situated according to military rank of respective occupants with higher ranking officers' quarters (seen at the beginning of this video) overlooking Hingham Bay. Fort Andrews was decommissioned in 1950.
In 1996, 30 of 34 Boston Harbor Islands including Peddocks Island were designated by the U.S. National Park Service as a National Park Area. Peddocks Island is open to the public dawn to dusk.
We have recorded extensive footage, documentation and artwork inspired by visits to Peddocks Island over the past 15 years. We hope to provide a comprehensive look at Peddocks Island in years ahead.
This exclusive footage of Officers' Row on Fort Andrews was made possible by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), permitting our entry into Fort Andrews in the winter of 2011. During this visit we were able to document a number of notable historic structures prior to their removal.
Note for SEO: Peddocks Island was recently used as a location in Martin Scorcese's 2008 film "Shutter Island" starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
