Pilot Mike Borszich and Flt Tech. Mike Arend (Maricopa Co. S.O.), were on patrol over the flood swollen Salt River outside of Phoenix Arizona when two swimmers who appeared to be in trouble were spotted. You can see one get out but his friend was having trouble and was seen going under numerous times. Being heavily loaded and with not enough time to configure the aircraft for a normal water rescue, the MD500 helicopter was manuvered so that the swimmer was able to grab hold of a skid and be pulled to shallow water. Although shaken she was medically OK thanked us for saving her, and was flown back to friends on the other side of the river. This was not standard Ops for us but the exigent circumstance prevailed and was handled best as possible saving the young mother.

  • Top notch rescue work. Way to think oustide the box. What ever happened to this Air Frame?

  • Last anyone knew a tour operator was using it.

  • Was this rescue from the salt river? And it looks like its next to the Eagle view RV park in Fort McDowell.

  • It was where the Salt and Verde rivers converge.

  • If you turn up the volume after they land you can hear the passenger comments.

  • Is she still alive?

  • Epic rescue! Well done indeed! :)

  • This has got to be sharing the first place for best helicopter rescue! Awesome control!

(The other number one was the US military pilot who rescued a platoon of soldiers of a roof in a chinook by backing up the ramp, and hovering it on the roof.)

  • Very nicely done boys. Right place at the right time.

  • Should have had her pose in front of the 369 for a picture.
