CTIA 2009 Wireless Convention

Some Fun Wireless Info:
1. The number of SMS messages sent by U.S. wireless subscribers in 2008 - 1 trillion! Triple the 363 billion in 2007.
2. That equals about 3,700 text messages annually—or 10 texts a day—for every cell phone subscriber (about 270 million as of December 2008, according to the CTIA)
3. Cell phone users in the U.S. talked on their phones for a whopping 2.2 trillion minutes in 2008. That comes out to about 4.2 million years of straight gabbing.
4. In our future:
- Access boarding passes as two-dimensional bar codes that can be displayed on smart phones and scanned at boarding gates and security checkpoints.
- On the horizon are cellphones that start the car or adjust the seats or open car doors.
- Text alerts after unusual transactions, allow customers to instantly cancel their credit cards.
- Doctors looking up your medical record or drug references on a smart phone or Personal Digital Assistant.
- wallet phones that use tiny computer chips named FeliCA that communicate with reader devices to deduct the payment OR receive text reminders for utility bills and then pay the bills with a touch of a button.

You could call it the Facebook Phenomenon, or just call it a quirk of human nature, but whatever the reason, millions of us are using our mobile phones to do most of our talking....with...our...fingers! Yes, it turns out we'd rather "MESSAGE" someone or "TWEET" them than actually talk to them, and the mobile phone industry is taking notice in a big way. More from the industry's giant show in Las Vegas, this week from LIFESTYLE Reporter Katlean de Monchy.
