So sad to hear of the passing of Louisa 'Markswoman' Mark, who passed away this Saturday 17th October 2009 in the Gambia. Louisa Mark was an original Queen of Lovers Rock and was voted top female reggae vocalist of 1978.

The fledgling singer cut her first record at the age of 15 for sound system operator Lloyd Coxsone. 'Caught You In A Lie', proved a huge hit amongst the reggae listening audience, with her heartfelt cry of misplaced trust. This was then followed by another success entitled 'All My Loving', a cover of a Beatles song. Despite popularity, Louisa quit recording for over 18 months because of contractual disputes.

She was then linked up with house producer and A&R manager for Trojan Records Clem Bushay, veteran of the UK reggae scene, cutting her next hit 'Keep it Like It Is'. Again the song was well received but poor promotion proved disillusioning and despite the terms of her one year contract she declined to record further.

Once free from Trojan, Louisa Mark's music began to take off. This track is her rendition of Michael Jackson's 'Even Though You're Gone'. It was released on the Bushays label and she followed this up with 6, Six Street penned by Joe Charles, Clem Bushay and The In Crowd, which hit the number one spot in its first week of release. Her music remains a staple of any lovers rock event and our condolences go out to her family and loved ones.

  • I was lucky enough to interview Michael Jackson in 1979 and I told him all about the Louisa Mark reggae version of this song. He was surprised and thrilled that it was such a big tune on the reggae scene. RIP Louisa. RIP Michael.

  • im 26 and i remember all these tunes, my mum played them 7 days a week 365 days a year its like tv wasn't about rarely got watched, now i seem to play them on a daily basis and my son knows the words....dont get tunes like these no more...!!!

  • She's still living as long as we play her music, which will live on. Can't beleive she was only 16 or 17. So much feeling

  • @tonyfr35 Now a days these youngsters don't appreciate shit. That's why.

  • Why would people give a negative to this tune?makes no sense. This is a classic tune.

  • you should not feel bad @lindsay3640 as you are hearing her now. It is just so sad that this reggae music does not co-exist or even better take over from R&B and Rap as the main music again. Reggae and reggae singers to me are just the best and they were so humble too. none of this vanity or gold chain business. Just good solid music that brought peace and love that step closer. Rip Louisa you have now rode a pretty white horse over to Zion and you have made us proud..

  • Deborahe, Jean and Louisa-what sweet music there must be in heaven right now.

RIP all of you, your music will live on for ever.

  • @lindsay3640 you do now and thats all that matters
