Another request for Hayley (checkattitude) this time for a song dating back to 1915 and the First World War. As you know millions died on both sides during that 'War to end all wars', but despite the horrors of the trenches, young men were encouraged to 'enlist'. To make light of the horrors, patriotic songs such as this were encouraged by the powers that be and this song became one of the best known from the Allied side in that awful period. In common with many I am sure, I only really knew the chorus before looking for this song and was quite surprised to find that there are three verses that go with it. Unlike Daisy Bell (A Bicycle Built For Two), I have been able to work out a chord progression for this song, so here it is.
I apologise for the use of the term Bosche, but it is part of the song and is the nickname given to German troops by the Allies at the time.
Wikipedia has the following information as to the origins of the song:
"Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit-Bag, and Smile, Smile, Smile" is the full name of a World War I marching song, published in 1915 in London. It was written by George Henry Powell under the pseudonym of "George Asaf", and set to music by his brother Felix Powell. A play presented by the National Theatre recounts how these music hall stars rescued the song from their rejects pile and re-scored it to win a wartime competition for a marching song. It became very popular, boosting British morale despite the horrors of that war. It was one of a large number of music hall songs aimed at maintaining morale, recruiting for the forces, or defending Britain's war aims.

  • Good singing and guitar playing, youre great to watch:)

  • @TaylorBeiberx Thank you for your kind comment

  • As someone who doesn't play any instrument, I never know how it's possible to play guitar at this speed for any length of time without your hand falling off!

  • @athull08 :-))

  • @threelegsoman Lol.

But on a serious note, doesn't your hand get tired? Or do experienced players just get used to it?

  • @athull08 You get used to it, though from time to time as I often play without a pick on my thumb, it does become painful.

The melody of this song's refrain reminds me a bit to the refrain of the WWII song "We're Going to Hang out the Washing on the Siegfried Line".

    All the best
