Great Dane Talos is learning how to enjoy having his feet handled. This is terrific preparation for nail trimming. There's no need to restrain, muzzle, or sedate a dog to trim nails. Teaching your dog to like nail trimming is ridiculously easy.

  • You can still work on the feet -- just go a little bit at a time. Yes, the quick does grow out with the nails. So start by trimming just a bit, but do it often -- at least once a week. I tend to work on only one paw at a time, not all 4 paws. It makes it easier, I think, for the dog to handle. Also, I really like using the Dremel tool, not the clippers. It's hard to quick a dog with the Dremel (not impossible, though, so do be careful).

  • Thank you for the advice and the videos...I haven't seen a video yet with the actual Dremel tool being used on the dog's paws...Do you have one or is that coming soon? Thanks again...

P.S. We started the clicker training today for our big boy!

  • Hey Smart Dog University...Great video - I wish I had this sooner...Unfortunately my four year old Dane hasn't had much luck with training...especially with his feet. I have to take him to the vet for nail clipping and since he has anxiety about this (due to his nails being clipped too short), his nails have grown much too long and I'm worried this will hurt him long term. How can I get his nails trimmed back now since they are so long? Do the quicks grow longer as his nails do?

  • brilliant, thanks so much. Just shows in a clear way what I need to know to get started with my Lhasa Apso, Archie, who has been scared out of his wits by professional dog groomers

  • is there another video after this? its very helpful
