The Song of the Nile

I befriended the Nile, and told him all my worries;
I also sent my greetings back to my compatriots.
I asked the great pyramid what patience means;
and the great pyramid said that joy and hope will soon appear.
...................................................................................................
Oh you, Greeks, offspring of Greece, who fight ferociously!
...................................................................................................
Oh you, Greece of the desert, you hurt me and you burn me! 1
Here, under the palm trees shade, we feel free and imprisoned at the same time!
Sophia was singing, and God was chanting 2
that Germany cannot possibly overcome this magnificent light.
...........
Let both of us start now a new life,
and let us behave as if you saw me this morning for the first time!
Let us forget our past, and build anew
our little nest that had collapsed long ago.
....................................................................................................
And as you were drawing doors and windows on the sand,
I suddenly desired to return to Athens as soonest as possible.
.........
London, Paris, New York, Budapest, Vienna, ..
and every night, drunk like skunk, they advance leaning
on one column after the other, until they go sleep in Parthenon.
.........
Sophia was singing, and God was chanting;
and finally it was written in the chronicles that this war took an end as well.

Notes
1 Greece of the desert: the term refers to Greek expatriates in Egypt during the period of occupation of Greece by the Nazi forces; they actively participated in the Nazi forces defeat and more particularly in the fight of El Alamein.
2 Sophia Vembo: the legendary Greek singer of the Victory of Greece over Italy in 1940-41.
