I've been listening to that track for almost 20 years now and never even entertained the thought of trying to play this solo. This is a wonderful thing you've done mikebrookfield.

@CarlosA2587 i am not a jazz teacher, im also a jazz student but it seems like Pats solos are a little "out" there as opposed to alot of older players, so maybe it might help to listen to alot of old stuff so you can get a feel for the music? At least thats what makes sense to me but who knows.

I see that you are a jazz guitar teacher and I have a question coming from a jazz guitar beginner. My teacher tells me that Pat Metheny or any of these modern players are not the ones that I should be listening to at the moment. He suggest older cats. Why is this?
But by the way, as it is obvious.. Amazing playing!

@CarlosA2587 It's important to listen to whatever you like and gets you excited about playing. Charlie Christian, Grant Green, Wes, Kenny Burrell are all good places to start transcription wise though. There's a good bit of blues in their playing so makes it easier to make transition from rock, still very difficult to play. I usually just teach transcription of the heads first for a good while to build up a set of tunes...

Try tossing in a chord once in awhile -- it gives you a place to land and augments the body of the piece.
