This is simple video showing my Silicon Graphics Indy R5K, 256 mb, XL24 starting up Maya 5.0 Irix version. The video is crapy for now but i hope i make one better later...

why i made it ? dunno, was boring, lol, Maya is a known 3D monster that requires much comp. power of the machine that run`s it ,,, its interesting how the small boy like Indy handled it ,,, don`t forget this is 94`-95` machine so 14 years old now, this is not spectacular, this is awesome!!!
When i recorded this video i had old quantum 4G scsi drive filled to the last byte. Now this Indy has a nice 73G 10K seagate cheetah inside, and it just flyes with it. I bet the loading time would be 10-20 percent faster. When i will have time i will try it again.

  • in 1988 and 1997 it was the rolls royce for making 3d content but today is very limited compare to a sun system or Mac pro station or any today pc with linux.

  • that is absolutely true - but you can look at it also from the brighter side, they [ any mips powered sgi ] can still make wonderful things, the excitement and creative power is still there regardless their age ,,,,,,,

  • :D

... in fact it`s not so bad like it seems :O it`s clear that one can`t make something special and complicated, but some simple logo or something like this still can be done :)

  • Excellent piece of hardware. Indeed, rather amazing it could handle Maya all the way up to version 5.

Nowadays everything is quantity, not quality.

  • I love these machines, SGI make the most attractive hardware!

  • @cybercow222 Man SGI systems still rock. I use a 900Mhz Fuel with Maya 6.5 professionally. Coupled with my Origin 300 system, it holds its own quite well. These guys knew how to make a a rocking system!

  • @Parsec994a Well there are a few demos that are *exclusive*. Thing is, these are purely work machines, and so if something is useful on one platform, like Maya, Avid's tools, Pro/E, Alias, it's available elsewhere, i.e. on Windows/Linux/OSX.

  • Cool video :) I recently got my hands on a copy of Maya 5 and SoftImage|3D 4.0 for my Fuel. They installed without a hitch. But I'm having trouble figuring out how to install the FlexLM licenses. Are there any how to's on how to do this?

  • When I was entering the animation program at my college, they were just phasing these computers out and I never got to use them. I love the unique colors and designs of the computer cases. Is there any software exclusive to these that has unique visualization/capabilities?

  • @phrozen3 the last maya released for irix was 6.5. unfortunately it's not supported anymore :(

great machine, anyways. i had an O2.

  • is it hard to get maya for irix these days ?

  • lol

  • Awesome. It was made in the 1990s, and it can still run today's programs.
