As much a pure entertainer as he was a marvelous vocalist, Jackie got his start as Clyde McPhatter's replacement with the Dominoes. He broke out on his own in 1957 with a series of hits that included among others "Lonely Teardrops" and a song written by his friend Berry Gordy, Jr, "Reet Petite". In April of 1959, "She Done Me Wrong" was recorded. Interestingly, it was the money made by Berry Gordy, Jr. during his work with Jackie that, in part, financed the foundation of Motown Records. Jackie went on to have many more hits utilizing his wide vocal range, but unfortunately he had a heart attack while on stage at a Dick Clark show in Cherry Hill, New Jersey in 1975 that left him comatose for the next 8 years. Dick Clark paid for all of his medical expenses until the day he died in 1984.
