From Three Psalm Preludes, Op. 32:
No. 1: This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. (Ps. 34, v. 8)
No. 2: But the meek shall possess the land, and delight themselves in abundant prosperity. (Ps. 37, v. 11)

  • So sublime and so English. Just love it.

    Duke Chapel is the perfect setting for this piece. Just one or two minor mistakes, especially when the organ swells, and a little off tempo there, but otherwise, it's just delightful.

  • Wonderful! Love the Howells psalm preludes, especially the first one. Can you believe this man didn't prepare voluntaries as an organist, but just improvised, whereupon such pieces as these came to birth?

  • Fine organ music... emotion, deep inspiration, religious feeling. Howells is really a great master!!
