The Romani language is of the Indo-Aryan language group and originates from the Rajasthan & Panjab regions of NW India. Most probably the Thar Desert region.
The Romani left India in approx 1026ad due to Islamic invasion into the lands. It is believed the Romani were Indian military and they made a journey that took less than 30 years where they are reported as arriving into the Byzantine Empire of what is now Turkey. They lived here amongst Greek speaking Byzantines and Armenian refugees before then moving across into Europe in approx' 1300ad.
