Thomas White performs John Lennon's 'Real Love'.

Filmed late one night outside the ex-site of Lewes Road Community Garden, Brighton, just a few days after its destruction by 'developers'.
We were hoping to break in and film on site but they've got 24hr security guards making sure nothing positive ever happens there... Still the spirit and the love of the place lives on in the community and it is in that spirit we made this video.

Lewes Road Community Garden:
"Once a bland outpost of the carbon economy - an Esso garage - then a derelict site for over 5 years, then transformed by the commitment, love and creativity of a random bunch of locals who dared 'imagine a garden' on the Lewes Road, Brighton.

In May 2009 about a hundred local residents transformed the site into the 'Lewes Road Community Garden'. A place for meeting and greeting, reflection and relaxation and grubbying around in the wholesome earth.

Hundreds of plants were donated. Huge pots painted and planted. A circular lawn laid. Planters made from old tyres and scrap timber. A fresh new sign put up. A beautiful wooden bench specially made and given along with loads of other furniture..

The garden was formally opened on Sunday 24th May'09, and has remained open daily from about 9am- 9pm.

In August 2009, without being discussed at any Council planning committee and without the knowledge of most local residents, permission was granted for the construction of 7 flats and 2 retail units on the site. Over 3,000 people signed a petition to keep the garden open last year and now a Say No to Tesco on the Lewes Road campaign has managed to keep them from taking over one of the retail units.

The development of the site offers no benefit to the local community but promises to deny it of a well used and much-loved shared space.

On Monday 28th June 2010 the garden was closed at a ceremony attended by over 150 pople. The garden has vacated and items have been relocated to several sites in the area including local parks and schools. A small garden has been set up next the Nat West Bank on the Lewes Road."
