the waterwheel seems like a lot of unnecessary complexity when you could just gear down an electric motor to get the same (probably better) effect.

My first thought was that they used the hose as a substitute to test it in lieu of a fast-running natural stream or diverted water from a holding tank...was that the intended power source? Nice effects from the waterwheel cups, each sounds a bit different. ;.)
