When I paste, all I get is a box FULL of the background color, the sprite i copied is not there

Yeah, that happens with some sprite sheets. I still haven't figured out why. If you copy the sprite from the sheet to a blank Paint document and then copy it from the blank document to GIMP it should work.

I learned something new about gimp and paint. I always use the select by color, or fuzzy select tool, but color erase is something I'm gonna try as well for removing backgrounds.

It's always good to watch other people work in GIMP, they do things differently and you might just learn something, like in this case. :D
