On this date in 1973 {Jan. 27th} "Killing Me Softly With His Song" entered Billboard's Top 100 chart. It reached #1 on February 24th and stayed there for four weeks, then "Love Train" by The O'Jays became #1 for one week but Ms. Flack reclaimed #1 for another week, for a grand total of five weeks at #1. @djordy44 WRONG sir... Lori Lieberman was the first to record Fox and Gimbel's song, in 1971. It became a bigger hit when covered by Roberta Flack in 1973.According to Lori Lieberman, the artist who performed the original recording, the song was born of a poem she wrote after experiencing a strong reaction to the song Empty Chairs by Don McLean. She related this to Gimbel, who took her feelings and put them into words. Then, Gimbel passed the words on to Fox, who set them to music.

The original is the best. Fugees cover version sucks.
