This is an amateur history channel video summarizing the events of the 1973 Oil Embargo, in which the Organization of Arab Petrolium Exporting Countries group stopped shipments to the United States, resulting in prices skyrocketing.
I saw a sign in the video with regular gasoline at just under $4.34/gallon ... ouch.
Using the Canadian cost of living index (it's all I have - I'm Canadian ,eh) July 1973 at 23.4 and March 2011 at 119.4, that would be the same as $22.15 today!
The comparison isn't precise what with the fall of the U.S. dollar contributing to the rise in the price of oil all other factors excluded, however, it it still a wake-up call that things could get a lot worse.

Some of this footage is modern. I don't remember trucks from 1973 having plastic wheel flashing.
