Shayla Topping and her three year old son Kazhia will be living in the two-bedroom home. The two of them have moved four times in the past year, and are currently sharing a bedroom at a friend's house. Topping says the new home will help her raise her son.
"He's really looking forward to having his own room and his own door and his own window, his own pool and garden and dog. All the family fun stuff."
Topping is looking forward to having a stable home to put an end to a stressful couple of years.
"I'm a single mom so that's just been stressing the heck out of me. Worrying about the next bill, this rent, their rent, and everyone else's bills too since I've been living with them. It's been a crazy ride. There will be better emotions at the end of this than there are now."
Most importantly, Shayla and her son will have a place to call home.
"Just my own. Our own."
UW-Superior student Nick Loining is working on the house this summer with a group of five other UWS students. Loining has worked for Habitat before and recommends other students to get involved.
"There's no better way to spend your Saturday. You get to be outside, there's perfect weather for it. It's just nice to help put a roof over somebody's head."
The home is scheduled to be done so they will be able to move in before Thanksgiving this year.
