New Year celebrations are in full swing in Russia. Moscow is greeting 2011 with loud outdoor festivities. Thousands of people are celebrating in the streets, welcoming the New Year with a clinking of glasses filled with champagne. A traditional fireworks display marks the coming of 2011 after the President's speech. Chukotka, near the border with Alaska, has become the first Russian region to welcome New Year. Russia has nine time zones and this means that it greets 2011 nine times, as opposed to 11 times in previous years, due to a reduction in time zones which was signed into law by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in March. Almost all of the European part of the country greets 2011 at the same time as the capital. One hour after Moscow, New Year will come to the country's western-most point -- the city of Kaliningrad.

  • @Mxyzptlk562 do you know the real reason why there'll never be universal healthcare in america ? there's more to it than meets the eye. the popular & approved reason that's in circulation is that it's ''lack of money'' for it. there's nothing further from the truth ! it's a deep seated psychological need of the average american to see his neighbor ... hurt... nobody admits this, but it's true ! that's typical slave mentality, it's heraditary and irradicable. this is just one example on my list.

  • Happy New Year Russia from Canada!!!!

  • I hope you realize you guys are bickering over something so stupid. History might matter to some and sometimes you can be proud of your country wherever you are from but demoralizing and stepping on other countries and their culture/religions/beliefs/etc. is just downright childish I thought people these days would have finally learned respect for others but congratulations you lot' have proven me wrong.
