i always used the same color as the cauldron (i.e. fire for red, blizzard for blue), and that caused the cauldron to explode a lot more frequently than it's doing for you here

There is a save room in there. It's kind of hidden, but if you keep right in the Den of Tides, you'll run into a white clam shell with a save point inside.

@Resobaso Really doesn't matter, the staff just changes the abilities you get that's geared towards magic and slightly increase your MP.

It really doesn't have a major difference in stat boost. In all honesty I find choosing the staff to be pretty much useless unless it's keeping the staff and dropping the shield so you have a balanced 3's across the board. I still use magic and love it alot in this game. :)
