This is the best version of "Dinah" I've ever heard performed. I filmed it in Sonoma, California, in September, 1999.

This was one of Bing Crosby's early hits from 1932.

The Royal Society Jazz orchestra (www.RSJO.com), from the San Francisco Bay Area, is one of the greatest traditional jazz bands in the world--and please don't call it Dixieland!

This uptempo arrangement is one of several versions the band has played over the years. Singer Jeff Gilbert is in rare form. Cornet player Kent Mikasa just wails, and Dick Mathias on sax and Andrew Storar on trumpet are at their best, ever. Trombonist Brent Bergman rounds out the horns, with Steve Apple on drums, and bandleader Don Neely does a virtuoso clarinet solo.

Presented with permission from the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra.

  • Fantastic! I love it!

    5 STARS!

  • tdub 1941: It doesn't get any better. Connected to a stereo and a sub-woofer, I have managed to a) make my refrigerator crash through the floorboards, and b) bring permanent deafness to my cat. I have also played this song at parties, and everyone leaves the room before Kent Mikasa starts his cornet solo. So I know I'm on to something good.

  • Great version of Dinah. The best version I have ever heard is by Red Nichols and his Five Pennies recorded April 18, 1929 on Brunswick 4373.

  • jazzgirl1920s: Have you made a video of it? My favorite of the era is Crosby, (Jimmie Grier??orchestra) and I don't have the stats on the recording, just a delicious memory on an LP re-release somewhere in my garage, which I have not heard for years. I have not doubt that Red Nichols would have OWNED this song; it was right up his alley. But the Crosby version did an arrangement which resembles this band, and that's what I know. Except that RSJO does it in a tempo which is fast and snappier

  • 2nd best version I've heard...because I'm Addicted to Armstrong's version lol

  • Louis Armstrong is hard to beat! I often think his versions are unique and don't qualify for comparison, because his interpretations were often free-form; he took the arrangements and "ran" with them. Thanks for your comment!
