China's Lahu minority has for centuries lived in the Yunnan hills bordering Burma. The hills have kept the Lahu safe and secluded but also poor and malnourished. Now forty-six ten-year old Lahu girls are sent to an elite Chinese primary school where they will learn to speak Chinese and enter mainstream Chinese society. Can the girls do well at the school yet maintain their cultural identity?

  • This people are traumatized twice from Christian Missionary and Communist China !!

  • Just believe what you've seen, not what you've heard!

  • thankyou thankyou thankyou for putting this up!!

  • The government has more than enough money. It even has enough to pay for America's war in Iraq (that's where we get the money.)

They don't spend it building up rural infrastructure b/c the people haven't demanded it yet, and they are trying to build the industrial economy on the east coast, so that they become the global economic superpower.

  • haha, what a self-right, superior attitude! yes a classic textbook piece about how to make a story as your wish by using real materials

  • i dont like how the journalist framed the story. Why didnt they label the french missionary in lahu area as an invasion of the lahu culture?

  • My goal: somehow obtain a large sum of money and help rural villages and children

  • my suggestion, you should follow these children and interview them when they become adults and also compare with those who did not get the chance to go to this school... as a well-educated westerner, dont make your judgement so easily... to us chinese, that is totally ignorant...

  • we dont know what is the better life for them coz so many minorites are unwilling to change their traditional lives. the school in the vid just provides a chance for them to have a better education. they still have their choice of their future...
