The thing is as much as these crimes are horrible and wrong, tourists NEED to be educated about these places before visiting. They need to have REPUTABLE guides to show them around or know someone that knows the area. Yes, you will be screwed by the local merchants for looking foreign but when your physical safety is concerned, you need to be with a group of people.
