This presentation was delivered by Prof. Martin Mills and Dr. Glenda McGregor as part of the North East Youth Organisations Network's Discussion Forum, held in February, 2010. Prof. Mills and Dr. McGregor summarise the findings from interviews that were conducted with students of flexible learning services in South East Queensland..
The interviews were conducted as part of a research project that is investigating the factors of success and challenges facing flexible learning services in South East Queensland.
The research project was a collaborative effort lead by a diverse group of individuals and organisations, including:
- Ms Linda Llewellyn (Brisbane Catholic Education Centre)
- Dr. Glenda McGregor (Griffith University);
- Prof. Martin Mills (the University of Queensland);
- Ms Frances Missen (Albert Park Flexible Learning Centre);
- Mr David Powell (Youth Affairs Network of Queensland);
- Ms Maren Strachan (YWCA);
- Dr. Sandra Taylor (Queensland University of Technology); and
- Ms Bernadette Wood (Brisbane Catholic Education Centre);
The research project had three aims.
1. To identify the key factors that drive success for students in flexible learning services.
2. To uncover the elements that strengthen, and undermine, sustainability of these services.
3. To highlight key elements of success in these services that can be transferred to 'mainstream' school settings, and in so doing improve the overall schooling experience for young people from all backgrounds in Queensland.
