I GAVE IT A LIKE BECAUSE IT IS CHALLENGING. MIXING THE AVANTE GARDE OF JAZZ WITH ACCESSIBLE POP WILL TURN MANY OFF, AND AS A NON-J, THO NAMES ARE FAMILIAR I DON'T DIG THAT JIVE. STILL, IT REALLY IS REFRESHING AND GIVES FOLKS PAUSE FOR THOUGHT, THANX!

@kingreich22 Many songs debut late in the year but don't peak well into the following year, as is the case with the Platters. They picked at #2 in late January in Vancouver ..I don't agree with Billboards rankings of the years best but the Platters looked good at #16 for the year 1959. We teenagers back whe didn't get much of an allowance and to have a few 45's to your name was a big deal...i had a paper rpute & was luckier than most....the top 40 charts were based on the request line.
1959 and I remember Frankie Avalon, Fabian(Hound Dog Man), The Platters with Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, That All American Boy by Billy Parsons and who can forget Connie Francis singing Lipstick on Your Collar? The Crests were riding high that year as well and so was Paul Anka. Never heard of Miles Davis or all that Rockabilly stuff that was being played elsewhere but I'm enjoying some of that Rockabilly now. Yes Eddie Cochran was a big name in 1959 but who was Art Blakey or Jimmy Smith??

@Ezdduf4kuZ This is an opinion. Not all the music on here sold well. The Jazz scene was quite influential, albeit Art Blakey and Jimmy Smith never sold too many records. Jazz artist Miles Davis is considered by many musicians, historians, and critics to be one of the greatest music artists of the 20th century. I don't base quality on how many records someone sold. If you disagree, there are plenty of videos dedicated to the 1950's based on records sales.

Also, The Platters are a great group, but "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" came out in 58' - great song anyway.
