Right in the middle of Belleville, IL is a very tight curve on the NS. I thought I had caught just a local crawling through, but just when I was about to shut off the camera (you'll see when) I heard another train. I swung around and was surprised to see a stack train approaching from about a thousand yards behind. It's my first and only encounter with two trains in one block.

  • i this on the old wabash line?

  • @123chinch456 No... Southern

  • Thats my house!! I live right there. You were in the alley of North 20th and West A Street.

  • Exactly right! However, after the stack train's locos passed I moved toward 18th street a bit; the last scene is from a slightly different vantage point.

  • That is why I hate dogs, they never shut up. Anyway, great video of action on the former Southern main line.

  • Don't mean to offend the dog lovers out there but I'm with you. And I should have mentioned this was the old Southern - thanks for pointing that out. It remains one heck of a well-maintained line.

  • The term here is called "Restricted speed" or "Restricted Proceed". Trains are allowed to travel in the same direction in the same block, following at restricted speed. The seconded train is required to be able to stop within half the range of distance seen short of train, engine, rail car, men and equipment, stop signal, or derail. I am sure there was continuous radio communication between the two trains.

  • that first horn is great...P3? don't hear many like that anymore.

  • @eck3300 cats are quiet and well behaved haha great video my friend

  • He probably got permission by the stop signal to proceed at restricted speed.

  • @bluestorm51 I don't understand your point. Main lines will go through yards, speed restrictions, industrial areas, yard limits, etc. And while I do not know the rules that govern this specific point and this specific time, there appears to be adequate separation between these two trains at this speed.

  • @StCatharinesRailFan8 No, east coast main line, England, UK

  • @MickeyLove01 Berea, OH?

  • Hmmm.. still doing the bonus train thing, eh? This has been going on since the early 80s....... My grandparents lived on South 44th St near the NS crossing there, and very often I would head back in only to realize another train was coming already

  • holy cow indeed

  • I actually witnessed something similar this morning. Train 1 was stopped on passing siding. Train 2 was slowly rolling by train 1 at about 15mph. Train 3 was about 500ft behind train 2 on the same track, also rolling by at about 15mph.

I REALLY wished I had had a camera with me.
