President Higgins dropped in to see Ireland's future scientists at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition.
Former winners were on hand to greet Ireland's new president as he took a tour of the projects on display.
The countrywide competition has attracted interest from all corners of the island, with Mervyn Storey making a visit and finding out what the youth of today are focusing on.
While former entrant to the competition, Minister of State Brian Hayes, also visited the RDS to see how times have moved on since he entered.
Louth TD Gerry Adams, who has watched the exhibition for years, came to visit in person this time and said he's learned a thing or two from the pupils he spoke with.
The 79 judges have their work cut out to get around to all 550 projects before the winner is unveiled on Friday night.
