This video shows how the iVTEC cam rockers work on the K20A2 engine found in the Acura RSX Type-S. This same design is applicable to several other Honda K-Series engines such as, but not limited to, the K20Z1, K20Z3, K24A2, etc.

  • @jowen034 wat? this is the a2. a3 only have the intake wit only 2 rocker. a2 as u see hear have 3 wit the exhuast valve aswell

  • I think I would fork over the extra insurance and money for the type s...I would have to drive both though..coming off a d15 I think anything would feel more powerful.

  • this is a k20a3 cam setup not a k20a2 and the one labeled k20a3 is a k20a2

  • @jedwards09elmira And since the VTEC lobe allows for both more valve-lift & duration (aka the VTEC lobe is much bigger than the 2 non-VTEC lobes) both valves (be it both intake or exhaust valves (no matter, really)) are forced to go along with what the VTEC lobe wants them to do. I know, you didn't ask for my life's story. I guess I could have just said "no," but I don't think that would've been very constructive. Ingenious design, isn't it? Oh, those brilliant Japs.

  • @jedwards09elmira In a DOHC 16-valve Honda I-4, there is 1 camshaft for the 8 intake valves & another camshaft for the 8 exhaust valves. Even though each camshaft only has to actuate 8 valves, there are actually 12 lobes on each camshaft. If we only consider 1 set of 3 lobes, as seen in this vid, the 2 outside lobes are used only when the engine is not in VTEC. When the engine crosses over into VTEC, the three rocker arms (1 rocker underneath each lobe) lock together. [continued further...]

  • @jedwards09elmira The K20A2 (along with the VAST majority of modern Honda I-4s) has 4 valves per cylinder. The reason it probably seems as though the motor has 3 valves per cylinder is because in this clip you see a total of 3 cam lobes. However, this clip is only showing us 1 of the 2 camshafts the engine probably has (I say 'probably' because some Honda I-4s are SOHC 16-valve engines). [continued in next comment]

  • wait so there are 3 valves per cylinder on these?

  • @Steez420

No, because the k20a3 has a different head that only has vtec on the intake cam side. Also the k20a3 block redlines at 7000, unlike the k20a2, which redlines at 8000. If u only changed the cams, it would still make less power than a real k20a2, because u wouldn't be able to rev to 8000, and you would have the same k20a3 head, with the shitty vtec. To get the k20a2 style of vtec u not only have to change the cams, u have to switch the head to a k20a2 as well.

  • Can you take the cams from a k20a2 and put them on a k20a3? Would that basically make it a k20a2? And would it even work like that?
