So why is it that someone can be really strong and do well at powerlifting but not at strongman? If my goal was just to be 'really strong'.. to be able to help my parents, grandparents and friends do things they can't because they aren't strong enough, how would I do that? That's my goal overall.. to do things that would require two or three normal people.

No he will never be great not until he will finally realize that strongman is not powerlifting... and that a 410 kg dedlift and sqat will not win him WSM if he can't pull a truck or do the fingers or any other strongman specific events he is not good at...
