READ THE INTERVIEW:

http://www.gurufocus.com/news/130009/interview-with-ndat-regarding-seth-klarm...

Many of you may not have heard that a US based multi-billion dollar corp. bought up 7,000+ acres of exceptionally good quality farmland in South Central Ontario's Dufferin County. Originally stating it was to be the biggest potato farming operation in ON. However as it turns out , the project is a 2,400+ acre, 200+ ft. deep open pit limestone mine. Their application was recently submitted to the Ministry of Natural Resources. It will take 40+ yrs. to complete the project, meanwhile the repercussions of this mine could (and likely will) seriously and adversely affect the water, the landscape, the community, surrounding agriculture land use, and with the potential to cause disastrous environmental scenarios for decades. It is potentially devastating not only for those in the Dufferin county but for all of Ontario. This land is our legacy and these farmers are our suppliers. Letters of objection to the proposal are critically important and urgent, they can be sent by anyone. This effects everyone, take the time to research and help by voicing your concerns.

Your concerns need to be addressed. Please take a moment to consider our future and act.

Letters of objection must be signed and contain your return mailing address and be mailed or delivered to both the

Ministry of Natural Resources, 2284 Nursery Road, Midhurst Ontario LOL 1X0

AND

The Highland Companies, Box 377, Shelburne, ON L0N 1S0

Letters must be received by both the MNR and Highlands by July 11, 2011. (WE got an extension of 75 days to review the 3000 page application)

  • Hi Katecorlett, thanks for the honest comments. I'm new to all of this.. and to make a video like I did really puts me out there. I'm no expert nor do I claim to be, but I do know how I feel about his.

  • @ALuimes Look, the truck traffic issue is remotely NIMBYism but the quality of water and the protection of Prime farmland is a genuine cause. Of course construction is happening and we need resources but how far do you go? "where else are they gonna go?" they don't have to go anywhere. We just have to be sensible: Let's get a proper environmental assessment maybe a smaller scale operation is infinitely less destructive. Just because we need limestone doesn't mean we can do anything to get it!

  • @ALuimes You do realize that if the water table is affected by this quarry that millions of peoples drinking water could be affected including those down stream ie. Guelph, Cambridge, Burlington, Hamilton, etc. Not only people who rely on well water in rural areas but also people who get their drinking water from Lake Ontaio. I'd suggest you educate yourself about watersheds and how they work.

  • What is the most effective way to stop this now??

  • @johnwalterswalk You're incredibly naive. When you build a quarry or landfill in a rural area, it's almost certain to be built on farmland. Wherever where these uses are proposed, people opposing them ALWAYS find some environmental reason why it should'nt be put in THEIR backyard. It's NIMBYs using the environmental craze as a convenient bandwagon to jump on.

  • This is a good video and only touches the tip of the iceberg as far as the comments about farm land/food land and water. There is a large water bottling company near this area, which is known by Americans to be the cleanest water anywhere. I am also disheartened that the land was sold, perhaps if it was as prestigious to have 100 acres as it is to have water front or 7000 sq ft of living space it may have been saved by private ownership.

  • this is an awesome video... we want to emphasize the small carbon foot print.. ie. potatoes should come from ontario... good things grow - in ontario! this quarry would become a garbage dump 20-30-40 years form now for sure... stop the quarry!

    thanks David

  • Where do you NIMBY's think resources are going to come from in the future if you keep stopping everything? NIMBY's & treehuggers, saving future generations? Hardly. You're a recipe for eventual disaster for our civilization! If you don't put quarries/landfills on farmland, where else are they gonna go? Wetlands and forests? Wait a minute...they're environmentally sensitive!
