We found this four day old pup on a beach near Homer, Alaska. He had been in the same area for a few days, he was very skinny, overheated and dehydrated. After sending a picture to the Alaska Sealife Center, we were told he was abandoned and should be rescued.

Please do not attempt to rescue any marine mammal without first consulting your local rescue hotline.

  • UPDATE: Port will be making his Discovery Channel Debut the evening of December 19th. The show's name is Raw Alaska, and is a compilation of events captured on home video in Alaska. Check your local listings for exact times, should be somewhere between 5 and 9 pm depending on your location. A clip of Port is also to appear in an upcoming episode of "When Vacations Attack" (we all know Port would never attack anyone) on the Travel Channel.

  • Sorry for the delay in posting, had some technical difficulties with the camera, but the release is now posted under the title "Alaska Seal Pup Release"

Enjoy and thanks for all the comments, it was an awesome experience.

  • UPDATE: Port and his friend Bleu were released back to the wild this past Saturday. He looked fat and happy and was released with another seal Bleu. Beautiful day and wonderful ending to the summer. I will edit up the video and post it soon.

Also, this story may be featured in an upcoming Discovery Channel show on Alaska, I'll post more info when I get it!

  • UPDATE: Port had a routine vet exam and is doing well but he hasn't developed an interest for chasing fish yet. It's a big change from being fed by a feeding tube so it may take a while. He has gained about 3 lbs since arriving at the Sealife Center.

  • UPDATE: We named the seal pup "Port" to keep with the Alaska Sealife Center's "Wine and Cheese" theme for 2011. He has gained some weight and shifted to a fish formula diet. He's now strong enough to swim and can stay outside during the day, not enough blubber to spend the whole night outside though. This week he got to try chasing live fish for the first time. They think he will be able to be released in August.

  • UPDATE: Port has finally started eating fish and now just has to gain some weight before being released back to the wild. He's now in the pre-release pool competing with the other seals to catch live fish. They plan to release him in mid to late September
