That'd be a rather nasty situation if it actually occured...thats why I'm careful when I walk along the railroad LOL. You never know when it might happen, its such a realistic scenario. Like one time when a plane crashed into the middle of the Florida's Turnpike not too long ago, I live like half an hour from where it crashed.

Why would we need to evacuate just beacuase of a locomotive derailment?

The key word in the alert is "may" need to evacuate. Here are some of the reasons.
1. An explosion may occur, damaging nearby areas.
2. Fire may start spreading, posing a threat to property
3. Threat of smoke inhalation.
The threat exists, but would not be immediate or massive. When I used nearby, I meant really close to the derailment
