In which John Green teaches you about one of the least funny subjects in history: slavery. John investigates when and where slavery originated, how it changed over the centuries, and how Europeans and colonists in the Americas arrived at the idea that people could own other people based on skin color.

Slavery has existed as long as humans have had civilization, but the Atlantic Slave Trade was the height, or depth, of dehumanizing, brutal, chattel slavery. American slavery ended less than 150 years ago. In some parts of the world, it is still going on. So how do we reconcile that with modern life? In a desperate attempt at comic relief, Boba Fett makes an appearance.

Okay, but they were Americans 150 years ago. You don't have to go hating and flaming in the comments about Americans. It's not like any of us were slave owners, traders or whatever. We all look down on slavery like you do.

    Just calm down.

I was expecting that too, thank the gods (or trolls, your choice) that it was not really like that so much. Seems as though there are not many people as such in the comments recently. I must say that I love your icon too, it is very cute (I have a Sollux shirt (he is my patron troll) and I have 2 Aradia cosplays (dead and got tier), so glad Homestuck is updating again)

Yeah, so this kind of information can be more beneficial to the masses if its presented in a more realistic format. Using smoke screens as a way to pass on knowledge to those who don't know any better can lead to misinformation & a false idea as to what really took place. I appreciate everyone who responded to my comments on this video, but am not here to go back & forth with people about their opinion & my own, so I will not respond to any replies to any messages directed toward me. Thanks all

He is highlighting several times the way people were treated as sub-human and how morally wrong that is, explaining the reasons the slave trade existed, including the justification many Christians used at the time. As a non-American, I don't think he's absolving America of blame - he even started that the reason the American import of slaves was lower was because their owners were breeding them and that 30% of the American population was at one point made up of slaves.
