OBEY x NRML..

This week marks a monumental day in the history of Norml Clothing as Shepard Fairey's Obey Posse departs from the nation's capital leaving a permanent art installation of epic proportions.

Born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, Shepard Fairey's early work was inspired by skateboarding culture and his immense passion for music and the graphics which adorned the albums of rock, punk, hip hop and hip-hop albums. In college his influences broadened further to reflect world events and world leaders, as well as his own take on pop culture.

Fairey's work has been recognized by The Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, and has been included in collections at The Smithsonian, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. However, he is quite possibly most famous for his work in the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election, when his Barack Obama "Hope" portrait captivated millions, and was shortly thereafter immortalized on the cover of Time Magazine.

Conceived, designed and prepped by one of the most influential contemporary and street artists of our time, Fairey's original artwork measuring 9 x 15 metres will be displayed onto the east facing exterior wall of Norml Clothing, on the corner of Rideau and Waller. It is the first mural to be done by the artist on Canadian soil, and becomes one of the largest Fairey murals in the world. The project which began early last Saturday morning reached its completion late Tuesday night after exhaustive efforts by Fairey's team who flew in to complete the project.

With the support of our municipal government, city council and local art initiatives, we are both honoured and humbled to have been chosen to showcase a project of such magnitude, and in turn create a permanent artistic landmark in Ottawa's downtown core. Our utmost gratitude to Mr. Fairey himself, as well as his tireless team of workers who braved the elements on endless shifts to make this vision a reality.
