@zen53gt and Nellynutmeg- as another commentor said the houses are expensive because the show is mainy filmed in Toronto, but if you look at prices just outside Toronto like a 30 minute drive from there- you can get brand new houses for a lot less.

If you watch the shows closely you will see how bad they cheat the people. No matter much the home cost they will get every penny out of the clients and still find a way to not give them all they want. If you have 6 hundred thousand to spend and the house is 2 hundred thousand it will cost 4 hundred thousand to fix it. If you have 6 hundred thousand to spend and the house is 4 hundred thousand then it will cost 2 hundred thousand to fix it for more work then the latter house. They double costs.

About half the real estate shows seen here in the US are filmed in Canada, mainly if not always in Toronto. In part due to tax credits and other incentives to maintain and foster Canada's movie and TV productions. The Canadian real estate market in general is now considered to be in bubble status, as happened in the US some years ago, but with better fundamentals and far less chance of a bad ending.
