The Emerging Midge Pupa is in effect just a varient of the Popular Shipmans Buzzer created by a man Called Mr Shipmans. It is a very effective pattern that has caught me a lot of trout.
This stage of the Midge or Chironomid is the pupa prior to the adult chironomid breaking free of its aquatic shell. As the Midge prepares to emerge it straightens out parallel to the surface. The midge also has a distinct orangy colour. This is the midge pumping blood through its body or wings.
Eventually the midge breaks free of its shuck and flies off as a adult to live for 24 hours...

  • Hi David, nice fly, i've never fished with one of these flies but i think after listening to your instruction i'll have to try and tye some and give them a go, Regards Alan

  • Hi Alan,

Many Thanks for you kind words,

In all honesty I never fish this type of fly, however I was recently speaking to someone who fishes them often. He says the most productive method for him is during a hatch with a good rise. Fish it singly on a long leader and watch where the fl lands. Give it a wee tug to pull it under then watch that spot and strike at any rises in that area.

For me I just use the Ascending Midge Pupa whch is a video i filmed today and will upload tomorrow.

    B R,

    ~David
