Bob Dylan composed this song.
Lyrics:
Listen to me baby
I'm trying to make you see
That I want to be with you, girl
If you want to be with me

But if you got to go
It's alright
But if you got to go,go now
Or else you got to stay all night

I am just a poor boy ,baby
Trying to connect
But I don't want you thinking
Or that I ain't got any respect

But if you got to go.....

Now I'm not trying to question you
To take part in any quiz
It's just that I don't have a watch
And you keep asking me what time it is

But if you got to go.....

Now I don't want to make you give
Anything you never gave before
It's just that I'll be sleeping soon
It'll be too dark for you to find the door

But if you got to go.....

  • Pretty good version of this Dylan tune, but you need to check it out on You Tube's "Nuggets from the Liverpool Five ( Part 1)". The LP5 version was the first recording of the song by an English group. This underappreciated group were also the first to fuse American folk with British rock'n'roll. The 12 string guitar they use and the sexy vocals add a lot to the song's sexy lyrics. Check it out!!!

  • I just checked this tune out by the Liverpool Five who recorded it before M.Mann...it's even better...go check it for yourself.

  • @Roxsox221

Its a Bob Dylan song - check that out !

  • @Oddsman57 Gotta agree with you mate..that Liverpool Five vesrion is the best

  • Such a shame Paul Jones never hooked up with another band that allowed his vocal talents to be heard beyond the 60's.

  • @burnley5960 Wot are you smoking?..I gotta agree with Loverockdog about the LP5 deserving recognition, particularly for synthesizing Brit/American rock'n'roll. Their version of this Dylan tune is completely original, definately not as pop oriented as MMs and definately NOT TOSH. I once had a copy of their recording of the MMwritten " New Directions", it too was very original. I hope it sometime shows up on You Tube. PEACE OUT!

  • No way are they in the same league as Manfred Mann ABSOLUTE TOSH

  • @burnley5960 Strangely enough, MM himself will likely disagree with you...in fact he liked them so much he wrote a tune "New Directions" that he gave exclusively to the Liverpool Five. It was released as a single on RCA Victor 47-8906......FYI...The LP5's version of the Dylan tune was only released in the US.......MM heard it , liked it and then recorded it mainly for UK release. Of the two versions I actually slightly prefer MM's....but the LP5 definately deserve greater recognition not TOSH!!

  • @Roxsox221 Absolute TOSH they were never in Manfred Mann's league give your head a shake

  • Hi marksoutof10....Fyi,,,the Liverpool Five were given the song first by Bob Dylan and their recording also ran into the same problem in the US.....particularly in states like Idaho and Utah with their large Mormon populations. That LP 5 version is well worth checking out on U Tube's "Nuggets from the Liverpool Five ( Part 1)"

  • I learned recently that the BBC wouldn't play this song with its original title - 'Stay All Night' - due to its "connotations" (the British were still quite conservative about some things back then), and so the song was re-titled to get airplay. The trouble is, it's easy to get it mixed up with a certain Moody Blues track!
