SHANTARAM is my favourite read - I recommend it highly
SHANTARAM is based on the life of the author, Gregory David Roberts
The author, Gregory, escaped from maximum security prison in Australia, became a fugitive in Mumbai, India - lived in the slums - opened a free medical clinic there - worked with the gangsters and ran guns to Kandahar.
This book is a gem. Gregory has the heart of a poet and philosopher. I read it before my first visit to India and Mumbai. It gave me an in depth view of life there. I had the pleasure of meeting Gregory twice in Leopold's (the gangster hangout in the book) I heard the walls were riddled with bullet holes shortly after my visit during the Mumbai attacks. By the way, Gregory is one of the most gracious men I have ever met. He is a wall of a man and quite imposing as he rode up on his Bullet motorcycle with his empress of a wife perched behind. And if by chance he is reading this - I wish to thank him again for his thoughtfulness of my well being by asking his man "Prabaker" to see that I made it back to my Uncle's home, cross town, safely. I hadn't realized it was so dangerous at night to be out alone.
I naively brought the book to my Uncle Aziz, a Bollywood film maker to purchase the option to make the movie. He laughed and showed me the front page of the Mumbai Times...SHANTARAM GIVES MADONNA TOUR OF SLUMS Apparently Johnny Depp had already purchased the rights! When I asked Gregory about when the film was to be made he said there were unforeseen delays because of the writers strike and the coming monsoons...that was a couple of years ago now... I'm getting impatient!
So yesterday, on a whim, I made this little video just for fun - it only took a few minutes and I don't have a lot of acting experience but it came out much better than expected ... I kind of shocked myself. I showed it to friends and fooled many. Some assumed it was Depp and didn't believe it was me until they watched it a few times...lol I've always thought Johnny was attractive - but now I feel narcisstic - lol...hope you enjoy the video.
Helllllooooo - Mr. Depp - when are you going to make this fabulous film???!!! If you won't - I'm available!
