Ok...no they're not. Varsity label was owned by Wright Records, and Philharmonic was owned by the Firestone Tire Company.

I thought the 1939 recordings were on the Varsity label. This appears to be on Philharmonic. Are the labels both owned by the same company perhaps?

According to some research, Handy recorded this song in 1922, but I can't find out on what label. In 1939, he recorded with members of the Louis Armstrong Orchestra on the Varsity label.

Handy's first release was "Memphis Blues," published in 1912. "St. Louis Blues" was published in 1914 and is far more well known.

W.C. Handy is probably actually playing the cornet on this recording. Even if he wasn't it would still be called "W.C. Handy and Orchestra" since it was his band.

Mr. Handy, ended up living in Yonkers,N.Y. with his second wife. I delivered the newspapers to them. My older brother still has a $5.00 check, made out to him from Mr. Handy as a christmas tip in 1956..The Handys were very very nice people. Every year they hada party on there fenced in property, Pontiacs, Cadillacs and Buicks all over the place..my mother (91) still lives around the corner from the Handy property..I believe decendants of the Handys still live there
