A tribute to the wonderful people of the rock a proud and strong people who have fought long and hard in the past and present for their rights and freedoms and to protect themselves from foreign aggressors and from threats closer to home. The Spanish have tried to take back land that was given to Britain via treaty but have failed each time, and each time it makes the people of the rock more stead fast in their resolve. They have been given referendums and each one was a resounding blow against Spain and each one in the future will be. They have their own government and control of all affairs bar military and foreign policy. As they say, self determination is democracy and the people of Gibraltar have spoken and Spain they say NO!. also my thanks goes out to the Portuguese who when Spain has blockaded the peninsula have help us support the rock by providing the use of their docks and supplies of water.

  • In this modern world there is absolutely no reason why Gibraltar should not be British, if that's what the people there want .And they do They a \re exercising their democratic and sovereign rights. Everyone needs to understand this simple point.

  • iraniaryan wants to remove Gibraltarians from their homes, which would also take most of their assets. It is precisely this kind of thinking - take over and rob them - which makes the Gibraltarians so suspicious of those who would deny them their basic human rights, and is of course illegal in international law. He forgets that the Treaty of Utrecht confirmed British sovereignty of Gibraltar for ever.

  • Ok, let's make an example: imagine that one day Britain loses its economic importance and becomes a 2nd class country, and that Newcastle upon Tyne is invaded by, say, wealthy Sweden. Of course, people from Newcastle would want to remain under swedish power, since they are richer than before, and it would save their problems. In the meantime, the UK would be forced to acknowledge swedish sovereignty, since it wouldn't be possible for it to hold a war against Sweden. Now, I ask you: is that fair?

  • @HerrOttoKranz But Guantanamo is only a prison, that's the point, Gibraltar is a colony and as long as their inhabitants want.

  • @HerrOttoKranz It really amazes me the view of democracy that Spanish Speaking peoples have, If you do what I want , its democracy and you are great, but if not, you are a traitor/fascist/undemocratic/anachronistic.

  • @HerrOttoKranz It only gave them for ever the city of Hong Kong.

  • @ HerrOttoKranz

That was a 99 year lease... admittedly it lasted for almost 150 but that was after heavy negotiations. This situation is different, the people WANT to be part of Britain and are more proud of their Heritage than the British are.

  • @rafflesman The Treaty of Nanking in 1842 also gave you Hong Kong forever...

  • @lecagot2 "US involvement in the Philipines was the best thing that ever happened to them"

Yeah, it was so bountiful that more people died in the Filipino-American War which followed that involvement than in the previous 375 years of Spanish rule.

I'm sure you also think that Operation Iraqi Freedom was the best thing that ever happened to Iraqis. That country having enormous oil reserves is of course irrelevant: only democracy matters. The only bullshit I have heard of is American propaganda.

  • @HerrOttoKranz Bullshit. as many Filipinos supported the US as opposed them. US involvement in the Philipines was the best thing that ever happened to them.

  • @HerrOttoKranz a small price to pay.
