According to Oda, the reason Nami's punches hurt Luffy is because (in a similar manner to Haki) it hurts his soul. It doesn't hurt him physically, it's just his feelings that are harmed.

@sadlobster1 Then again, let me put it to you this way: If you were stuck inside a giant snake with him (the same guy who got you swallowed up in the first place) and he told you the only way out is through its ass, what would you do to him? I doubt laugh/ignore would really work for such a ridiculous claim.

@sadlobster1 You can think of it as her way of showing Luffy that she likes him. While Usopp, Chopper, Franky, and Brook goof off, Robin humors him, and Zoro sleeps, Nami and Sanji beat the crap out of him for very good reasons(except, again, for giving ALL the treasure to Big Mom). It's like Helga from "Hey Arnold." Helga constantly bullies Arnold, but deep down, she cares for him, even when he may not feel the same way. People are just strange like that.

@Rexaura888 I still find it wrong that Nami beats on Luffy on a regular basis. I know the guy can be a bit of a dork but they're supposed to be friends and real friends don't put each other in the emergency room due to a thrashing.

But that's just me. I've dealt with Luffy's kind of people before and I actually either ignore them or just laugh with them because they're so fun
