A brief look into the history, designs and inspiration from Maeve Gillies, Creative Director and Founder of Maevona. An in-depth, and personal tour with Maeve, as she delivers a bit about her Scottish heritage, and inspirations.
The designers history: Maeve Gillies is a multi-award winning designer and jeweler from Edinburgh, Scotland. She has been making jewelry since the early age of 15. Maeve went on to obtain her formal education from the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland and then a Masters degree from the prestigious Royal College of Art in London. She received several national design awards, including three from the Royal Society for the Arts in London. Maeve had the opportunity to work for an independent jeweler in a retail environment which gave her the ability to truly understand what customers want. From 2001-2004, Maeve was Head of Design for Domino, the largest platinum jewelry manufacturer in Europe. In 2004, Maeve co-founded MaeVona with long-time friend and business partner, Ken Cowin. When MaeVona launched in 2005, the company received immediate industry recognition for its originality, innovation and workmanship and has repeatedly been awarded industry top honors. Today MaeVona continues to create and supply high-end diamond jewelry to select top retailers across America. The designers inspiration: Maeve finds inspiration in the natural beauty of the rivers and mountains of Scotland, her Celtic heritage, the flowing movement and feminine curves of the Art Nouveu period and the beauty she sees in the everyday objects that surround her.
The designers USP (unique selling propositions): MaeVona is a designer brand that specializes in unique bridal and fashion jewelry. The designs are modern, contemporary yet classic. The jewelry incorporates Scottish design elements. Each engagement ring is named after a different Scottish Island. There are no straight lines or edges, only fluid curves. So much attention and detail goes into the making of each piece, i.e. it takes several hours to polish a single ring. Only the most skilled crafts people to bring our designs to life. Every ring is custom made to specifically fit a customers diamond. MaeVona jewelry is comfortable, smooth and easy to wear; each ring is comfort fit. Our jewelry can be made in 18 karat yellow gold, rose gold, white gold or platinum as well as a combination of two different metals. MaeVona creates heirloom pieces which will last generations. All of the jewelry is made in New York City.
The designers manufacturing process: It all begins with pen and paper. From there a drawing is made that is then translated and perfected in CAD. Each piece is then individually cast in metal and polished by a skilled crafts person to make it just right for the customers stone. Finally, the diamond or colored stone is carefully put into the setting. Throughout each step of the process, thorough inspections are preformed to guarantee that MaeVonas high quality standards are met.
The designers mission or mantra: Maeve explains that she designs for women just like me, fashionable women who, appreciate and love beautiful, individual design.
What makes them unique and special: MaeVona jewelry is refreshing because you have not seen anything like it. While most engagement rings on the market get lost in a sea of pave diamonds, MaeVona shines bright as light reflects off the smooth, impeccably polished, metal finish."
