Metropolis - the Babel Scene

Here is the Tower of Babel, as portrayed in the 1920s motion picture "Metropolis." Because the director, Fritz Lang, lived in a very secular European society, I don't think he would have been interested in Babel's spiritual meaning, but he was right on about how it would take a dictator to build it. @darkonilink911 Then why did you go to see transformers dark of the moon 11 times?? For all of this insipid CGI bashing today I think a lot of you are hypocrites when TF movies and others gross billions and billions......where is the CGI backlash then???

Als man sich noch richtig mühe bei den Filmen gab.

Filme müssen fast immer teuer sein damit sie was werden, aber manche können mit dem Geld nicht umgehen. Fritz Lang gehörte nicht dazu.

I think Lang hits the mark perfectly here. The Babel scene perfectly sums up what has happened in Metropolis and the tragedy of the great vision of Fredersen and Rotwang and presumably others degenerating into an oppressive, uncaring elistist society. Later Rotwang's speech to Maria at his house suggests beyond his desire for vengeance is some sympathy for the workers, though he sacrifices that to revenge.

On the contrary Lang was a Catholic who may have understood the meaning of the tower of babel's true meaning better than many theologians.

I very much loved the film, but the ending does a lot of damage to it. To turn the scientist into a gorilla and everything into a stupid fight on the rooftops kept it from working as a piece of entertainment for me, regardless of the aesthetic achievements.

LOL wow there slow down. I'm a big fan of this too but you have to remember that however good the film looks (and it looks great) it falls down somewhat on plot. Unlike other early films which tried for little or no plot ,Lang went the other way and tried for far too large a plot. The film does suffer a bit from this but it is still a cinematic clasic
