The pride, presence, and tradition of the military in Dayton, Ohio, is unquestionable.

With two prominent military installations in the area, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) and the Springfield Air National Guard Base (SANGB), the Dayton region is home to more than 25,000 Airmen and civilian Air Force employees.

In addition to military pride, another hallmark tradition of the region is the unwavering dedication to Dayton's minor league baseball team, the Dayton Dragons. Thanks to fan support, the team has sold out every home game since the franchise began in 2000—setting a North American record of 844 consecutive sellouts through the conclusion of the 2011 season.
When the Dayton Development Coalition (DDC) began to look for ways to recognize and honor the servicemen and women of WPAFB and SANGB, it was a natural fit to tie the proud military tradition of the region with the Dayton Dragons.

That is how the Hometown Heroes Program began between the DDC and the Dragons eight years ago.
