April 20, 2009 -- Chief Caleen Sisk Franco, of the Winnemem Wintu tribe of Northern California, makes a statement regarding the tribe's lawsuit against the federal government. The lawsuit seeks an injunction against the government to regain the nation-to-nation status promised by the 1851 treaty at Reading Ranch, which was made by the tribes in good faith, but was never ratified by the President. In addition, when the US Congress established the Central Valley Project, to build Shasta Dam the Winnemem were promised "like land to live on". Their homes were taken, their land was flooded, but they received nothing in compensation.
