This is a simulation of the Walschaerts valve gear, one of the most widely used designs towards the end of the steam era.
The valve gear is responsible for timing the cylinder's inlet and exhaust valves.
A single control lever operates the gear. It can be adjusted for forward or reverse timings, as well as changing the cutoff. An early cutoff limits the amount of steam entering the cylinder on each stroke. This is more economical because it allows the steam to efficiently expand in the cylinder.
Made in Hammer for HL2. Work in progress!

The guy who invented this gear, which was fitted to more than 80% of latter-day locomotives, never made a dime from his brilliant idea... looks nice though.

Just brings a big smile to my face every time. One of the best running/ valve gear animations I've ever seen!
Just one question, who is that singing Chatoonoga Choo Choo. Think I misspelled it, anyway, would love to know.
