  • If you look at the inside of the flip top, the surface is very uniform and consistent in its shine. It looks very aluminum to me, soft. The rivets on the hinge appear to be done by a machine rather than by hand, but that in itself isn't a clear giveaway because rivets were machined back then.

Take a pencil, hold the bag by the fabric and lightly tap the top with the pencil. If it sounds solid, its probably steel. If it sounds tinny, its probably aluminum.

  • It definitely sounds solid. I tapped it this am for dh and asked, "what kind of metal is this?" He said "Tin; I can tell by the sound". I trust him on the subject of metals.

The inside metal still has intact plating (if not silver-plate, perhaps nickel?)

  • Is the material silk?

Is the flip top heavy or light for its size?

Finish looks original too me, its too uniform to come from deterioration as I can tell.

Very hard to tell. I think the top is the key. If its steel, its probably old. If its aluminum, its probably a replica.

  • I think that it is not aluminum. What if someone had tried to clean it, and whatever they used pitted the finish this way?

What about that safety pin? That is old. (at least 50 yrs)

I can tell only one part that is silk without doing a burn test.. The lining (which could've come later) is made of a brittle fiber (I'm wondering about early acetate/rayon.... needs research--- unless you know. lol)

  • Cleaning agent pitted? Possible, but not in a uniform manner like that. I think you would see streaks or something.

I thought about that safety pin too. I looked around the house and found a few that look exactly like that one. I think the ones I found are old too, but that wouldn't date the bag, but the pin.

If the top isn't made of alum. or tin, then I would say its old. Today, steel is very expensive to use as opposed to alum. or tin.

Either way, its a very interesting bag.

  • You know... I replied to this last night.... grrr

    anyhoo

yes, the pin only dates the pin.

    and thanks. this is fun.

  • Thank you for this tip! (suz--- on my other channel)

  • Maybe you can try google " Dewdrop Bag ". There's some bags that's look like that.

  • Have you not sent that to me yet? *raises eyebrow for a third time*

  • Now that you've put it in still pictures, it can be appreciated for its beauty, it's gorgeous!
