Here's a quick restoration of an RCA U70 UHF/VHF converter circa 1952.

  • could i hook cable to it and get the higher channels or is it just over the air

  • @aberdurant There are some odd jacks on the back that I believe would allow you to inject a cable signal. You'd need to make an adapter though and I'm not sure what the impedance is.

  • What does the isolation transformer do for you while testing?

  • @compu85 Good question. The main reason for using one is protection from a hot chassis. That's a set with no power transformer which presents a real shock hazard. This device does actually have a transformer so it's not really doing anything for me, but I've gotten into the habit of always using it regardless.

  • @bandersentv So does that mean one side of the incoming power is hooked right to the chassis? Is the danger when the line voltage neutral might not be at a true ground level?

  • @compu85 Yes, it is on some sets. They didn't use polarized plugs on this old stuff either so it's possible for the chassis to be hot.

Others have a floating chassis like the Motorola VT71.
