  • Is it really only 10 minutes to change from hanging caterpillar to chrysalis? How long after it hangs does it start the process of encasement? Also, THANK YOU for this AMAZING video!!!!!

  • @bldann

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. Yes, that is "live" time, once the first split appears into chrysalis-10 minutes! When it hangs, the process is variable. The ones I've seen hang at the end of the day and turn into chrysalis the next mid morning-i.e. less than 12 hours. Must be light and temperature dependent however-when the first frosts and fall cold set in, it can take 24 hours. The cold arrests the process-bring one inside and it'll change within the hour. Molecular miracles

  • this is great - but do you have any additional footage that covers the entire process until the butterfly emerges from the chrysalis?

  • yes, on my site next to the caterpillar video

About 1 week later the butterfly emerges... and depending on weather conditions--can fly off within hours. The butterfly mouthparts are curled up fairly quicklyafter emergence.. It looks as if the thorax material is forced into the wing structure for size and strength.Seconds are critical-an abrasion/tear in the wing can ruin entire wing.A fall at the wrong time will cause a permanent defect. What a biochemical process this must be.

  • do you know how long was the caterpillar in length before it was a chrysalis?

  • approx 2 inches..milkweed stem-mainstem on the plant is about 1/4 in. diameter

  • ._.

  • ok now i feel stupid.. id always thought caterpillars weaved their cocoons out of silk... not peeling off their own skin :/

  • I love how caterpillars change into butterflies.

    It's like pokemon evolving

  • Pretty amazing how the plant can support all that weight and won't fall down.

  • @RiownerTias it takes it shredded skin

  • why do caterpillars take so long to transform itself to a chrysalis?

  • wow, now I'm thinking did it take in the shredded skin of it or did it just somehow turn inside out?

  • its wiggling

  • it looks nasty when u look at the hanging part
